Stephanie Bishop's new book The Other Side of the World blew me away, so I quickly chased up her debut at the library. There's less plot in The Singing, and an even greater focus on unpacking her character's internal life. The book jumps off with a chance meeting between the protagonist and her ex, which spirals into a series of memories and associations, painting a vivid picture of a /5(4).

The book is about "why" people sing, and "why not" - so it is application is broad, and not limited to any one way of "doing church". (The "how" of getting people singing is covered in a second volume).

Written in a very light-hearted anecdotal style (which helps him step over issues that people end up rowing over), but very thought provoking/5(6). The Singing Thing book. Read 8 reviews from the world's largest community for readers.

The first of two books addressing the whys and The Singing Thing book of congregational singing. Unapologetically anecdotal, it deals not with musical theories but with the reasons why people sing and how best to.

One of the world's leading experts on congregational song writes for those who want to encourage others to sing or sing better. He offers ten persuasive answers to the question 'Why do we sing?' Each chapter provides one answer.

These range from the straightforward ('because we can', 'to express emotion') to the more intriguing ('to revisit the past', 'to obey a command'). She is a character from the Dr.

A joyful introduction to the art of singing, written with the needs of beginning singers in mind. Taking a “Sing First, Talk Later” approach, The Singing Book gets students singing from the very first day. Combining a simple introduction to basic vocal technique with confidence-building exercises and imaginative repertoire―with 30 new songs―The Singing Book teaches beginners the vocal Reviews:   I bought this book alongside the previous volume "The Singing Thing", and I must confess I prefered the first book.

The application of the second book is more limited - the first book had much to say for any congregational singing, irrespective of style, but the second book is focused primarily on how they do worship in Iona (unaccompanied, teaching memorable multiple part songs to /5(2).

I just finished reading John Bell’s The Singing Thing: A Case for Congregational is rare that a book upsets, delights and inspires me all at once, but Bell managed to do so. Perhaps I’m so interested in the “why” of congregational song (indeed, the “why” of singing in community in any setting) because our congregation is currently exploring new ways of singing in worship.

The Singing is the last book in a beautiful series by Australian writer and poet Alison Croggon. I am notoriously stingy about buying books (a three-read rule, although different than Jasper Fforde's interpretation of that phrase!) but I bought the last three books in this series as soon as they came into the store, knowing that I would love them/5().

John L. Bell is the author of The Singing Thing ( avg rating, 40 ratings, 8 reviews, published ), Cloth for the Cradle ( avg rating, 18 ratin 4/5.

by Rae Nyx, Vocal Coach There are many different philosophies on what is most important when it comes to singing. I feel the most important is Passion. It’s pulling the heartstrings of the person listening to the song. I have gotten into sooo many arguments with other vocal coaches about this very thing.

Here are the six main aspects to think about or to bring up to your own vocal coach: 1. The Singing Thing. BACK; NEXT ; Character Analysis. There’s a Thing to be found in this poem, and this thing “can sing” ().

But the Thing sings too long, and ultimately bores the poor girl listening to it. The second half of the book, a largely anecdotal discussion of common objections to singing, was itself worth the purchase.

Predictably, Bell fails entirely to deal with any implications of Scripture’s commands regarding singing, or the diagnosis of sin in.
